The Freeze started the weekend strong on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Legends FC South and a 10-0 win over Matrix. Santa Rosa followed Sunday with sound victories over FC Golden State, 4-1, and Legends FC Black in the semi-final, 2-0.

Santa Rosa Gets By Elk Grove 2-1
Last Second Goal Secures Victory

Nov. 5, 2011 - Elk Grove, C

Santa Rosa United didn't feel like traveling 2 hours to the Southern part of Sacramento to tie. They also didn't feel like playing the entire game with no subs just to tie. Fortunately, the Freeze got its wish by squeaking out a 2-1 victory on Maddy Gonzalez' last second goal.

With one player out due to injury and four others out for their varsity soccer playoff games, Santa Rosa only dressed 11 players. There are no excuses though, and Elk Grove played a great game.

On the game-winning goal, Gonzalez was assisted by Megan Moore. The ball crossed the goal line as the referree was blowing the whistle.

Gonzalez scored her team's first goal as well for an early 1-0 lead.

Second Half Sparks Santa Rosa
Freeze 4 Marin FC 0

Oct. 22 Trione Field, Santa Rosa - The first half was okay, but the second half was tremendous. That's what most of the spectators, players and even the coach will tell you after yesterday's victory over Marin FC, 4-0. Santa Rosa took a 1-0 lead into intermission, but came out smoking in the second frame, scoring three more times in a match that wasn't as close as the score indicated.

Maddy Gonzalez started the scoring for Santa Rosa with a put in off a nice cross to the back post. The goal came at the 33rd minute. The Freeze came out fired up to start the second and it showed as the girls scored quickly on a powerful strike by Samantha Zepponi. A few minutes later Bria Varnbuhler scored near right post off a beautiful assist by Gonzalez. Maddy slotted the ball from the left side of the box to find a wide open Varnbuhler. A few minutes later Savannah Stoughton scored the final goal from the top of the six. Brianne Parsons had the assist.

The win improves Santa Rosa's Norcal Fall League record to 4 wins and 1 draw.

Next up for the girls is the Placer United Prestige Tournament at Cherry Island, October 29th and 30th. See you there!

Freeze First Half Goals Propel Shutout Win
Santa Rosa beats Mustang Outlaws 2-0

Oct. 1, 2011 - Trione Field, Santa Rosa

It was a nice birthday present for Savannah Stoughton on Saturday as her Freeze team used two first half goals to beat the Mustang Outlaws, 2-0. Santa Rosa improved its RAL record to 2 wins and 1 tie with the victory.

The Freeze benefitted from goals by Yvette Perez and Maddy Gonzalez. Perez started the scoring with a far back corner strike from the left side of the goal box. A few minutes later Gonzalez shaked off a defender on the right side of the penalty box and launched a powerful far post strike that found a home in the back corner of the net.

Bria Varnbuhler just missed a goal with a shot off the crossbar late in the first frame.

Next up for the Freeze is an away game on Saturday, 10/15 at Cherry Island to take on the Placer United Prestige.

FREEZE WRAP UP SPRING LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Girls win on PK"s over DeAnza Force 98

September 17t in San Mateo

It took a while . . . 3 1/2 months to be exact . . . but Santa Rosa finally got its Norcal Spring League Championship last Saturday with a hard fought 3-2 victory that wasn't in the books until the penalties were taken.  Santa Rosa got goals from Chloe Colbert and Maddy Gonzalez to take a 2-0 lead in the first half. DeAnza, who has been ranked #1 in the nation in its age group for a few years now, scored right before the break on a PK after their forward was brought down in the box. The Force then tied it up in the second half on a free kick to send the match into overtime.

The game also counted as the first Regional Academy League match for both teams. That result will go down as a 2-2 tie, however, because regular league games don't go to extra periods.

The Spring League Championship was originally scheduled for the first weekend in June, but weather, field availability and tournament schedules delayed the final.

Santa Rosa loses another heartbreaker to Arsenal FC, 3-2

San Diego Polo Club - The Santa Rosa United Girls U14 Soccer Team had another very successful tournament at the 29th Annual Surf Cup. Unfortunately, the Freeze lost another heartbreaker to Arsenal FC, the unofficial #1 team in the country. Just like the Far West Regional Tournament a month ago, the club from Southern California beat Santa Rosa 3-2 in a semi-final. The girls played well and very hard, going ahead 2-1 in the second half. However, Arsenal scored on three set pieces during the match to pull out the victory. The last goal came on a corner kick with just five minutes left. Santa Rosa scored first on a breakaway goal from striker Taylor Ziemer. Then, Arsenal tied it up on a corner kick and that’s how the first half ended. In the second half, Taylor again had an opportunity and got fouled in the box. The ensuing PK was blocked by the Arsenal goalie she could not hold on and Taylor was there to put the rebound in the back of the net. A few minutes later Arsenal scored in an indirect kick in the box to tie it again. Then the game went to OT and Arsenal scored the only goal.

The Freeze are having a wonderful year and we are all very proud of them! Next up for the girls is the Mustang Stampede August 5, 6 and 7. Come on out to Danville to cheer the girls on!

Freeze makes it to the semi-final of the Far West Regionals

Boise, Idaho; June 24, 2011 - The Santa Rosa United Freeze put together a great run at the Far West Regionals this week, making it to the semi-final match against Arsenal FC, who most consider the #1 team in the nation. The defending champions from Southern California pulled out the victory, however, 3-2, with a last minute goal.

It was a back and forth game with Arsenal striking first midway through the initial frame. It remained 1-0 at half. Santa Rosa came back to tie it five minutes into the second frame on a strike by Samantha "Zip" Zepponi. The Freeze almost took the lead a few minutes later when Maddy Gonzalez used some nifty footwork in the box to get through three defenders leaving her one on one with the goalie. The long Arsenal netminder guessed right though and when Maddy tried slotting the ball near post it was denied and the score remained tied.

Arsenal then showed the kind of moxy it has by coming right back a few possessions later giving them a 2-1 lead. Santa Rosa fought hard for nearly 20 minutes though and it paid off as a header goal by Maddy of a free kick by Megan Moore sent the Santa Rosa sidelines into euphoria. Extra time was just a minute away . . . we thought.

Arsenal doesn’t give up it just gets stronger. The following kick off produced a furious rush by the opposition. A cross from the left side was defended and headed out of the box by the Freeze, but Arsenal’s tall midfielder kept it in. A few headers back and forth and the ball was right at the foot of an Arsenal forward who made a nice move at the right side of the six to get clear from our defense. The resulting strike was too good for Claire Howard to save although she made a tremendous effort on the ball before it found its way inside the far left post.

Santa Rosa played very well in this game, which most felt was the final match. The Freeze stormed through its preliminary round games and the quarter-final match against Las Vegas Premier, scoring 20 goals and only allowing 2 in the four contests.

Arsenal went on to beat Sereno from Arizona, 2-1, for its second straight Regional title.

February 13, 2011 Elk Grove, CA - The Santa Rosa United Freeze U13 Girls won the California Youth Soccer Association North State Cup yesterday with a convincing 2-1 victory over one of the top teams in the nation, the Mustang Xplosion from Danville. Santa Rosa got an early goal in the 12th meeting of the match on a beautiful volley from the top of the box by midfielder Bria Varnbuhler. Bria’s goal came off of a perfectly placed corner kick by forward Megan Moore.

Santa Rosa continued to put pressure on the Mustang throughout the first half and it paid off again when Samantha Zepponi blazed through the middle of the Danville defense and scored on a powerful shot in the left corner of the net.

The Freeze managed to control most of the game with a strong midfield that won the 50/50 balls in the air and played their possession game on the ground. Maddy Gonzalez, Bria, Isabelle Lilly, Brooke Dunbar, Allison King, Megan Bertolone and Megan Moore all had strong games. They also fed forwards Zepponi, Brianne Parsons and Faith Deas with well placed passes.

Defensively, Santa Rosa played its strongest game of the year against one of the state’s best offenses. Led by keeper Claire Howard, the back line of Chloe Colbert, Amara Ortiz, Savannah Stoughton, Sydney Rickert, Isabelle and Brianne turned away the pressure by Mustang and helped the offense with quick transitions.

Congratulations to all the girls for a great tournament! The next stop for the Freeze is the United States Youth Soccer Association Far West Regionals in Boise, Idaho June 20th-26th. See you there!
