This past weekend, Santa Rosa United Academy teams (U8-U10) had unprecedented success in their NorCal State Cup competitions. Five Academy teams made it to the NorCal State Cup Championship game, winning four titles and placing second in a fifth.
This success is unprecedented in SRU Academy history and marks a new chapter for the club. Feeding off of the success of the inaugural Winter Development Academy in January-February of 2009, Santa Rosa United Academy coaches were able to build new teams in the younger age groups and ultimately lead these teams to NorCal State Cup success.
The U9 Girls Riptide, coached by Patti Johnson, were Gold Bracket Champions. They defeated the Manta Rays 2-0 in the semifinals and defeated MFC United 2-1 in to earn the championship title.
The U10 Girls Tremors, coached by Martin Perez, were Super 1 Finalists, advancing to the championship game by defeating MFC Jr. Pumas 2-1 in the semifinals but giving way in the finals to a very talented Elk Grove Everton team with a final score of 1-2 to earn a second place finish.
SRU’s second U10 Girls team, the Tsunami, were Bronze 3 Champions. Coached by Doug Moore, the team pulled out two penalty kick shootouts in both the semifinal versus Sacramento United Blaze and then again in the finals over South Valley United 99 Black to secure the championship title. Nerves of steel!
On the boys side, the U10 Boys Arsenal led by Justin Selander were named Platinum Champions after pulling out a pentalty kick shootout win against Burlingame Gold in the semifinals and a convincing 4-1 victory over MVLA Jaguars in the final.
And finally, the U10 Boys Liverpool were crowned Bronze 7 Champions with three resounding victories in round robin play. Coach Rick Hewko led his team to a 4-0 victory over Cal Odyssey White, a 2-0 victory over Top Gun B, and a convincing 6-2 final win over MP Strikers.
