U15 Girls Avalanche - Northern California Spring Showcase Champs!

The SRU United Avalanche exhibited perseverence and team play in winning the championship of the Juventus Sporting Club, NorCal Spring Showcase that was held at Skyline College in San Bruno over the weekend of March 6/7, 2010.

First round play included a decisive 4-2 win against the formidable San Ramon Azzurre. The 2nd game resulted in a 0-0 draw against the Orchard Valley Storm who the Avalanche have never beat and faces again in April 2010 during the first round of NorCal State Cup. In the semi final match, the Avalanche defeated the talented ACC Maverick’s (Richmond, Ca), 1-0 in a hard fought and physical match. Alison "Skid" Skidmore punched in the winning goal resulting from a bending free kick taken by Midge Minton near the 25 yard line that bent over the wall and careemed off the cross bar into the on coming path of Skidmore who drove it into the back of the net for the win.

The Lamorinda United 94, rolled into the final with three convincing shut out wins, allowing no goals to be scored against them. Their wins came against the Palo Alto Victory 1-0, Ajax United 1-0, and the Sonoma County Alliance 2-0.

The final. After a back and forth and hard fought effort by both teams, playing in severe wind and chill, the game was tied after regulation time expired. Lamorinda had not beaten the Avalanche during any of their last three meetings and really wanted this one. In Sudden death overtime, the game was still tied going into the second 5 minute period. With 1 minute left in the game, the Avalanche was awarded a free kick near the 25 yard line. Midge Minton who is emerging as the free kick expert for the Avalanche, addressed the ball and sent a bending rocket over the wall which was too much for the keeper to handle. The keeper attempted to short hop the ball and instead misjudged it’s momentum and the ball careemed off her hands into the on coming path of Skid, who once again was in the right place at the right time and sent the ball into the back of the net for the win and the championship.

"What a game", said Luke Oberkirch, the coach of the Avalanche, "The girls really played well this weekend".
