The Tremors, SRU Under 14 Girls soccer team, were crowned champions in the most prestigious tournament in the western United States Monday evening at the Polo Grounds in Del Mar, California. The SRU Tremors, current two time Northern California State Champions, represented the northern California soccer community against twenty of the top teams from California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Utah. Through six matches over three days of play, Goalkeeper Megan Klee and her defense gave up only one goal. In the Championship match the Tremors beat a strong Slammers team from southern California 2 to 0 with goals scored by team captains Alyiah Shields (who led the Tremors with four goals in the tournament) and Jordan Girman. "The combination of excellent goalkeeping, defense, and dominant midfield and forward play was what separated us from the other teams. The girls really play well together and they deserve a lot of credit." coach Luke Oberkirch said.
The team is composed of players from Cotati, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, West County, & Windsor including Gabby Albavera, Kitana Gonzalez, Candace Hillegas, Carly Hittenmiller, Hanna Maillard, Leanna McMahon, Grace Radeski, Keely Roy, Sami Stefan, Megan Sullivan, Brianna Van Giesen, Ella Wright, and Tera Ziemer. "This is one of the best, if the not the best, tournaments in the United States, so to come away with the title is quite an accomplishment. I think it says a lot about Santa Rosa United and how the girls have been coached and developed at the younger ages." Oberkirch said.
